The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained Janty Emmanuel, a Gombe woman, for openly spraying N1,000 notes at a social gathering as part of a quick action against currency abuse.
On Monday, May 20, 2024, at G-Connect in Tumfure, Gombe State, Emmanuel was spotted opulently spraying cash, according to EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale.
The EFCC was alerted to the incident after it was caught on camera and rapidly went viral on social media.
Based on the information, EFCC agents quickly located Emmanuel and brought her in for interrogation.
She acknowledged committing the crime during questioning, attributing it to an exuberant and careless moment.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act punishes currency abuse, and the EFCC has vowed to keep up its campaign against it.
The organization issued a warning, stating that actions of this nature will not be accepted since they devalue and diminish the Naira.
After the investigations are finished, Emmanuel will be charged in court, and if found guilty, she could be subject to both a fine and jail time.
This event follows a recent case in which Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, a well-known transvestite, was found guilty of a similar crime and given a six-month prison sentence.
