The story of Deborah Samuel, a Nigerian student killed in May 2022 on suspicion of blasphemy, is examined in this report. Amnesty International condemns the Nigerian government for not doing more to prosecute the offenders in spite of video evidence and public uproar.
The violent lynching of Deborah Samuel, a schoolgirl convicted of blasphemy, in May 2022 shocked Nigeria. In particular, an unsettling video that was making the rounds online contributed to the national and worldwide outcry following the horrible tragedy in Sokoto. The assailants’ faces were shown in the video in an open manner; one even held a matchbox while boasting about the crime.
Even with this apparently convincing evidence, more than a year has gone by with no arrests or charges. The international human rights group Amnesty International has denounced this lack of accountability. Amnesty International has blasted the Nigerian government for not enforcing the law and providing Deborah Samuel with justice.
