Scripture Union Calls for Government Resistance to Same-Sex Relationships in Nigeria

The Scripture Union, a Christian organization focused on promoting Biblical principles, has urged the Nigerian Federal Government (FG) and lawmakers to resist supporting same-sex relationships. This call comes amidst debates on LGBTQ+ rights in the country.
Religious Beliefs at the Forefront
Wilfred Onu, the Scripture Union’s National Chairman, emphasized the organization’s grounding in Biblical teachings. He described same-sex relationships as “unbiblical, immoral, and founded on lies.” The Union sees such relationships as contradicting core Christian values and principles.

Opposing the LGBTQ+ Ideology
Onu stressed the distinction between love and acceptance for all, a core Christian tenet, and endorsing the LGBTQ+ ideology. The Scripture Union urges the Christian community to advocate for God’s love and redemption while firmly rejecting ideologies perceived to contradict Biblical scripture.

Potential Global Impact
The press conference, held in Ibadan, Oyo State, also addressed the issue’s wider implications. The Scripture Union expressed concern that legalizing same-sex relationships could pose a threat to society as a whole.

Nigeria’s Legal Landscape
Same-sex relationships are currently criminalized under Nigerian law. The Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act of 2013 prescribes penalties of up to 14 years in prison for same-sex relationships and up to 10 years for individuals or groups supporting LGBTQ+ rights.

A Nation in Discussion
The Scripture Union’s statement adds to the ongoing conversation about LGBTQ+ rights in Nigeria. With a population where Christianity is prominent, religious views significantly influence social and legal discussions on the topic.
